CHAPTER 14

“Have you talked to Jackson yet about Rafe?” the disembodied voice on the phone asked Willow when she answered her cell phone.

Her hand started shaking, and she said, “There hasn’t been an appropriate time to do it. I’m planning on doing it tonight.”

“See that you do. When I call you back tomorrow, I want to hear that you did. If not, I can’t be responsible for what Jackson will think of the photographs. Goodbye.”

Willow pressed end on her phone and then felt sick to her stomach. She went into the bathroom, afraid she was going to throw up, but nothing happened. She sat on the chair in the bathroom for a long time, wondering what she should do. She knew Jackson would leave her when he saw the photographs.

She walked into her bedroom and took the photographs out of the bottom drawer of her dresser, where she’d stored them beneath some scarves. She sat down and looked at them. When she was finished, she put them down and thought about what she was going to do.

A few minutes later she’d made her decision. Willow picked up her cell phone and called Jackson.

“Jackson Steel’s office. This is Miranda. How may I help you?”

“Hi, Miranda, it’s Willow. Is Jackson available?”

“Yes, he just got off the phone. I’ll tell him you’re on the line.”

Willow knew she could have called him on his cell phone, but she wanted this to be a little more formal.

“Hey, sweetheart, to what do I owe the honor of your call?” Jackson asked.

“I’m just getting ready to fix dinner and wondered what time you were planning on coming home.”

“Well, it’s 4:00. I’ve got some more work to do here, so I’ll probably leave about 6:30 and that should put me home about 7:00. That okay with you?”

“Perfect. I’ll see you then,” Willow said.

She spent the next two hours packing her bags, knowing that when Jackson saw the photographs, he would tell her to leave. She was resigned to the fact that she and Jackson would no longer be together, and she really couldn’t blame him for what she knew he’d do.

At 7:00, she heard the door leading from the garage open and Jackson’s booming voice, “Willow, I’m home.”

She took a large sip of wine and then went to greet him, hoping that the glass of wine she’d already drunk would give her courage to do what she knew she had to do. She walked over to the ice bucket where she was chilling a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne, which she knew was Jackson’s favorite.

“Did I miss something? What’s the occasion?” he asked when he saw the label on the bottle of champagne. He took the glass from her, looked at her closely, and then said, “Something’s wrong, Willow. What is it?”

“Yes, something is terribly wrong, and I’ve been crying all afternoon, because I have to leave you. I thought we’d have this last bottle of champagne before we go our separate ways. Please, sit down.”

“What are you talking about? Did I forget to do something? I know it’s not your birthday.
